Prototype testing during an innovation sprint

Innovation sprints: from idea to tested prototype in weeks

Every organisation has ideas that sit in a backlog because they feel too risky or too expensive to try. The usual path is a business case, a long planning cycle and a build that takes months. By the time real users see the result, the budget is spent and changing direction is painful.
An innovation sprint takes the opposite route. A small, cross-functional team spends a focused period moving from a problem to a realistic prototype, then puts it in front of real users. The result is evidence, not opinion, about whether the idea is worth building.

How a sprint works

  1. Understand. We align on the challenge, talk to experts and existing users, and agree on one specific target moment to focus on.
  2. Diverge. Each team member sketches solutions on their own. Good ideas come from quiet thinking more often than group brainstorming.
  3. Decide. The team reviews the sketches, votes and the decision maker picks the direction. No endless debate.
  4. Prototype. We build a realistic, clickable prototype. With AI-assisted design and code tools, this now takes days instead of weeks.
  5. Test. Five to seven target users try the prototype in one-to-one sessions while the team watches and takes notes.

Why it works

A sprint compresses months of meetings into a short, structured process with a clear end point. Decision makers are in the room, so there is no waiting for approvals. And because users test something that looks and feels real, their reactions are far more reliable than answers to a survey or a concept slide.
Not every sprint ends with a green light, and that is the point. Learning that an idea does not work after a few weeks is a win compared to learning it after a full build.

When to run one

  • You have a promising idea but no evidence that users want it
  • A team is stuck debating options and needs a way to decide
  • You want to explore an AI-powered feature before committing engineering time
  • You need a validated concept to secure budget or investment
